Indie Rock is an umbrella term that covers a lot of bands playing in a large number of genres, from post-punk and garage rock to indie pop. It refers to music recorded through small independent labels. Indie Rock firstly appeared in 1980's in the UK

Indie Rock usually stays very close to rock music. At the same time, its songs usually are less aggressive and harsh, with lyrics concentrating on personal feelings.

Althoght word "independent" is usually associated with lack of popularity, several bands that refer to indie rock have had mainstream success.
