Jazz
Jazz is a music genre that was formed in America at the beginning of the 20th century. It is based on blues and African American folk music. The term "Jazz" originated from West Coast African American slang, but its meaning is unknown. Jazz had its main popularity from 1920s to 1960s.
Jazz music is based on a number of distinctive modes such as "swung" notes and polyrhythms (simultaneous sounding of several independent rhythms). At the same time, improvisation is a vital part of jazz music.
Jazz influenced a number of music styles, including pop music and rock, and also spawned a variety of subgenres.
