A residents of several towns in Nevada have found out that they could use music by The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin to fight off an annual invasion of crickets. The farmers in this area usually suffer from bugs invasion from May until August after they hatch in April. It is said that crickets can form swarms up to 3 km long.
Bur recently farmers have found out that loud music makes crickets stay at the edges of the booming deterrents range. According to the residents of Tuscarora town, they drew inspiration from an article about people using gongs to deter the crickets.
There is yet no scientific explanation for this phenomen. «The vibrations may deter the bugs, but I don't know of any research that says yes or no», said Nevada entomologist Jeff Knight.
