Former Black Sabbath and Rainbow frontman Ronnie James Dio has passed away at his home yesterday, on May 16. Reason of his death is yet unknown. Singer, aged 67, has been diagnosed with stomach cancer last November and was undergoing course of treatment during last months. According to the reports, he was making good progress.
Report about Ronnie James Dio death was posted on his official website ronniejamesdio.com by his wife. She wrote: «Today my heart is broken, Ronnie James Dio passed away at 7:45am 16th May. Many, many friends and family were able to say their private good-byes before he peacefully passed away. Ronnie knew how much he was loved by all. We so appreciate the love and support that you have all given us».
Ronnie James Dio started his career in hard rock band Elf, and later joined Rainbow, which was formed by Deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore. Together they recorded such famous albums as Rainbow Rising (1976), On Stage (1977) and Long Live Rock 'N' Roll (1978).
In 1979 Ronnie James Dio replaced Ozzy Osbourne in Black Sabbath to record highly successful album Heaven And Hell (1980), followed by several other studio efforts. While performing with Black Sabbath, Dio also popularized «devil's horns» gesture, which became famous among fans of hard rock and metal music.
